A report from Tien Giang Province Traffic Safety Committee said that the accident occurred at 5 am when a taxi suddenly crashed into a truck running in front of it on the Trung Luong-My Thuan Expressway. The taxi was then hit by another truck running behind.

"The strong collision left the Chinese tourist in the taxi dead on the spot and the driver was badly hurted," the report said. "The three vehicles were all heavily damaged and a long section of the road fences were also broken."

The traffic accident caused a serious traffic jam of over 10 kilometres as the three vehicles blocked both lanes of the expressway which has no emergency lane.
The Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway spans 51 kilometres. The VND12-trillion four-lane expressway was put into operation in April 2022 and serves between 22,000-23,000 vehicles per day. The expressway will have two emergency lanes added during its future expansion.
