Dr. Hoang Phuc Lam, deputy director of the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, said the tropical depression would turn into a storm in the East Sea within the next 24 hours.

By this evening, September 2, the storm would be off the central provinces from Ha Tinh to Thua Thien-Hue, causing powerful winds and rough seas.

After that, the typhoon would move into the Gulf of Tonkin, bringing there with strong winds and heavy rains for provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Ngai.

Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue are predicted to experience the most torrential rains of up to more than 500mm on September 2-6.

According to the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, Storm Podul destroyed and damaged 1,232 houses, submerged 405 others, and harmed 6,769 ha of rice and 403 ha of vegetables. A total of 6,370 domesticated animals were dead or swept away, while damage was inflicted on 2,941 ha of aquatic farming.
