Major Le Hong Thai, from the provincial traffic police department, said the overloaded buses were spotted by police on National Highway 1A in Gia Tinh District while moving from central Nghe An Province and northern Quang Ninh Province.

The bus drivers failed to obey an order to stop and police gave chase, calling in support from units ahead. The buses were halted 20km down the highway, in Quang Xuong District.

One bus was carrying 117 passengers, nearly triple its licensed 37 passenger capacity while the other bus was carrying 74 passengers, compared to permitted 34.

Le Anh Tuan, vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, ordered the local department of transport to mobilise six buses to get the passengers to their destinations.

The cars were fined a combined VND123m and the drivers were revoked their driving licenses for 30 days.

Thai said local police seized more than 50 overloaded buses over the past four days.
