John Garth, 74, and his 67-year-old wife Shan pose for a photo with doctors at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi before being released on April 13.
The man tested positive for the virus on March 13 and was transferred to the Hanoi-based National Hospital for Tropical Diseases. He has type 2 diabetes and has struggled with leukaemia for 10 years.
His health rapidly worsened and was sent to the Intensive Care Unit. He was one of the first three Covid-19 patients in Vietnam that needed ventilators.
Doctors continued to update his critical conditions and the Ministry of Health had held various meetings to instruct the joining of all efforts to save him.
And the patient started to recover from April 5 when he could use an oxygen mask. On April 8, he no longer needed the oxygen mask and could breathe on his own. He also tested negative for the virus four consecutive times from April 8-13.

The couple being treated at the hospital
And he was discharged from the hospital on the evening of April 13.
The man and his wife boarded a flight arranged by the British government on the early morning of April 14.
Speaking before leaving the hospital, the wife, who was also infected with the virus and recovered from the disease on April 2, expressed her gratitude and admiration for the doctors for having saved them from Covid-19.
"We were very shocked when informed that we had the virus," she said. "I had thought that I could die from it in the first days but then I gradually felt better. We were treated at two different rooms and when I heard that my husband was sent to the Intensive Care Unit I could understand his critical condition."
The woman said that she used to be a nurse and she knew how dangerous the virus was. And they were very lucky to be saved from it.
"Vietnamese doctors have saved the lives of my husband and me," she said. I'm not sure we can survive it if we were in the UK."
On April 14, 10 other Covid-19 patients will also be released from the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
