Nguyen Van Binh, Director of the Ministry of Health’s Department of Preventive Medicine said the infection rate is higher than last year.

Since early January, Vietnam has had over 220 reported cases of A/H1N1, with seven related deaths. The figures indicate an increase of 161% in terms of cases and 40% in fatalities compared to the same period last year, he noted.

The Hanoi-based National Hospital of Tropical Diseases had received 147 A/H1N1 patients from January 17 to March 14. Of the patents, 120 are from Hanoi and the rest from the surrounding areas.

According to Binh, most of people who die of A/H1N1 flu have chronic diseases before catching the influenza.

The Ministry of Health warned that the weather conditions of spring are very favourable to the development of A/H1N1 flu. The disease may easily spread in crowded places such as schools, offices and factories.

In order to prevent the disease, people are advised to use simple preventive methods such as cleaning hands regularly with soap, gargling with salt water, and having regular and healthy meals to increase people’s immunity against the flu.

Any person who have symptoms of coughing and running nose should wear medical masks while any suspected cases should be sent to medical stations or hospital at the soonest.
