An additional 15,684 Covid-19 infections were confirmed in Vietnam on Sunday and Hanoi continued to record the highest number with nearly 3,000 patients, the Ministry of Health has reported.
According to the ministry's report, 15,643 of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in 61 out of 63 localities in the country with five localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (2,982), Danang (888), Khanh Hoa (680), Binh Phuoc (661), and Binh Dinh (599). There were 41 imported cases confirmed the same day.
The new infections showed a decrease of 662 cases compared to yesterday's figure. There were 11,196 infections found in the community.
As of Sunday evening, 2,017,268 infections had been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country in late April. Some localities that have recorded the highest number of patients include HCM City (511,257), Binh Duong (292,084), Dong Nai (99,284), Hanoi (88,227), and Tay Ninh (85,416). Vietnam has so far confirmed 68 Omicron-infected cases.
With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 2,023,546. The country now stands 28th among 224 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.
On January 16, an additional 9,326 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 1,727,290.
On Sunday evening, a further 129 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 35,609. The high fatalities were reported in some localities including HCM City (15), Dong Thap (28), Kien Giang (9), Can Tho (9), and Khanh Hoa (8 ).
Vietnam on January 15 administered 1.05 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The country has so far conducted over 168.00 million Covid-19 vaccine shots, with over 72.31 million people having received two doses.
