Doctor Du Tuan Quy, at the HCM City Children's Hospital 1 said that between 350-400 Covid-19-infected children were coming for treatment daily at the hospital.

"Although the number of Covid-19 child patients continues to rise, most of them show mild symptoms," the doctor said. "Only one or two patients need to be hospitalised for intensive care, and they are mostly overweight or have some underlying diseases."

Doctor Quy added that most of the patients were carrying the Omicron variant which caused fewer problems. However, the patients might experience a high fever during the first days of infection, which caused parents to worry and take their children to hospitals.

The doctor advised parents to take their children to ward or district healthcare centres for check-ups and treatment to avoid overcrowding at hospitals.

"Health workers at local healthcare centres can decide whether the patients need further treatment at hospitals or just to take medicine and be monitored at home," he said.

According to the HCM City Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention, the number of HCM City children contracting Covid-19 over the past two months has dramatically risen. This has been attributed to the reopening of schools and infection caused by the Omicron variant.
