The domestic route linking Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City ranked as the world's fourth busiest in 2025, handling 8.9 million passengers, according to data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on July 16.
IATA said the world's four busiest domestic air routes this year were Jeju-Seoul in South Korea with 13.3 million passengers, Sapporo-Tokyo and Fukuoka-Tokyo in Japan with 9.6 million and 9.5 million passengers respectively, followed by Vietnam's Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City route with 8.9 million passengers.
According to IATA's global air passenger market rankings, the United States remained the world's largest aviation market in 2025, recording 890.1 million passengers, up 1.6 per cent from 2024.
China, the world's second-largest market, posted passenger growth of 4.8 per cent over the previous year, reaching 776.1 million travellers.
Industry forecasts suggest China could overtake the United States to become the world's largest air passenger market during the 2030s. The United Kingdom ranked third in IATA's market rankings, followed by Spain and Japan.
IATA compiled the figures from 1,315 airlines worldwide. Aviation analysts said the data highlighted the continued recovery and expansion of global air travel demand, with Asia playing an increasingly significant role in the growth of the international aviation market.
