Hue People's Committee Chairman Le Tri Thanh inspected infrastructure along the Huong River on August 9, including boat wharves, tourist transport services and connections between attractions on both banks.
Thanh said the river and its surrounding landscape offered strong potential for distinctive tourism products that could improve visitor experiences and encourage longer stays.
City departments were asked to identify potential sites for boat wharves, stopovers and service areas linked to tourist attractions and heritage sites, as well as explore suitable accommodation and tourism experiences on the river.
Plans must also address waterway safety, fire prevention, environmental protection and service quality, while improving maintenance facilities for tourist boats.
For projects along the riverbanks, Thanh called for architecture, materials, colours and night-time lighting to blend with the surrounding landscape and preserve Hue's heritage setting.
Thanh also inspected flood-prone areas and called for assessments of ground levels in low-lying neighbourhoods and the capacity of urban drainage systems.
Authorities were asked to review reservoir operations across the Huong River basin to create additional flood storage capacity ahead of heavy rain while maintaining adequate water supplies during the dry season.
The city is also studying options to divert part of flood flows through suitable channels to reduce pressure on central Hue, with potential impacts on residential areas, infrastructure and erosion risks to be assessed.
Thanh inspected erosion along Thuan An Beach, where protective embankments are under construction to safeguard infrastructure, residential areas, coastal forests and local livelihoods.
