Fields along National Highway 32 through Tu Le Valley and Khau Pha Pass in Lao Cai Province are among the first to ripen, while other well-known terraced fields reach their peak later in September and October.
The rice season in Mu Cang Chai lasts about two months, with fields ripening at different times depending on the area, according to local residents.
Rice in Tu Le Valley and at the foot of Khau Pha Pass, around Lim Mong, Lim Thai and Cao Pha villages, typically ripens earlier, with the best viewing period running from mid-August to early September.
Visitors travelling during the National Day holiday on September 2 can expect to see valleys covered in golden rice before the harvest begins.
Further beyond Khau Pha Pass, the renowned terraced fields of La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh ripen later and are usually at their most colourful from mid-September to mid-October.
The area is home to Mam Xoi and Mong Ngua hills, two of the best-known landscapes associated with tourism in Vietnam's northwestern highlands.
The staggered harvest season offers nearly two months of golden terraces, from Tu Le and Khau Pha in late August to La Pan Tan and nearby areas through October.
Visitors have already begun arriving in mid-August for activities including paragliding from Khau Pha Pass, at an altitude of 1,268 metres, offering aerial views over Lim Mong Valley and its terraced fields.
A zipline across the valley is also available in the Tu Le-Khau Pha area for visitors seeking a less demanding alternative to paragliding.
Events during the golden rice season
A series of tourism events is planned in Mu Cang Chai from August to October.
The 2026 Flying over the Golden Season Paragliding Festival is scheduled to open on August 30 at the Khau Pha landing site, when rice fields in Tu Le and Lim Mong valleys are expected to be at their peak.
Hundreds of paragliders are expected to take off from Khau Pha Pass and fly over the golden rice fields, alongside powered paragliding displays.
August and September also mark the season for the Tu Le green rice festival, where visitors can learn how com, or young green rice flakes, are traditionally made from locally grown Tan sticky rice.
Planning a visit
Mu Cang Chai is about 250-300 km from Hanoi, accessible via the Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway and National Highway 32 through Nghia Lo and Tu Le.
A two-day trip can include the rice fields and hot springs in Tu Le, an overnight stay near Khau Pha, followed by paragliding and a visit to Lim Mong Village.
A three-day trip allows time for Nghia Lo and Tu Le, paragliding at Khau Pha, Lim Mong Village, sunrise at Mong Ngua Hill, Mam Xoi Hill, the Dinosaur Spine and Mo De bamboo forest.
