A doctor checks a stroke patient at Bach Mai Hopspital.
Mai Duy Ton, director of the Stroke Centre at Bach Mai General Hospital, said that they admit between 50-55 patients daily, eight percent of whom are young people.
"We've seen more young people suffering from strokes," the doctor said.
Ton said that the number of stroke patients has increased, but not many people know about how to deal with these cases properly.
"While immediate treatment will minimise the long-term effects of a stroke and prevent death, many people may fail to recognise them to have rapid and accurate responses," he explained.
The director of the 108 Military Central Hospital, Vu Ngoc Lam, also said they have received more stroke cases over the last few weeks.
"The number of patients suffering from cardiac problems and strokes is higher compared to the same period last year," he said.
The doctor advised people, especially older people, to keep warm, engage in regular physical exercise, and avoid going out at night or early in the morning when temperatures are low.
Choosing healthy meals with nutritious food can help prevent strokes, he added.
Vietnam's northern region faces continuous cold spells, with night-time temperatures falling to as low as seven degrees Celsius in low-land areas and below zero degrees degrees Celsius in mountainous localities.
