Phu Quoc airport expansion fast-tracked for early completion

The expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport in the southern province of Kien Giang is being accelerated to ensure the project is completed ahead of schedule.

Dozens of workers are pushing forward to complete the project ahead of schedule despite challenges in transporting equipment and machinery from the mainland amid continuous rain.

Tran Minh Son, Vice Chairman of Sun Group’s Board of Directors, said the project is set for completion in the first quarter of 2027.

Work is being hastened at Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung recently conducted an on-site inspection of the airport expansion project, a key project for APEC 2027.

Under the expansion plan, Phu Quoc Airport will operate as a joint-use facility for civilian, military, and commercial purposes. It is designed to accommodate wide-body aircraft, including the Boeing 747, Boeing 787, Airbus A350, and equivalent models.

A key feature of the plan is the addition of nearly 200 hectares, which brings the total projected area to 1,050 hectares, supporting long-term development.

The airport will be expanded to include 30 parking stands, with additional aprons planned near the VIP terminal. By 2050, it is expected to accommodate around 45 stands. This area will be prioritised in the planning process to serve APEC 2027.

To accommodate future demand, the 2021-2030 phase includes plans to extend the runway and taxiways in both directions, add rapid exit taxiways, and upgrade auxiliary infrastructure across the airport.
