Ha Tinh farmers turn away from salt making
>> Nghe An sea salt makers quit due to low incomes Many households in the central province of Ha Tinh have given up on salt production due to the hard work and low incomes.
Before 2006, Ky Ha Commune in Ky Anh District was the biggest salt hub in Ha Tinh. Around 1,000-1,200 local households engaged in the job with a total productivity of around 10,000 tonnes per year. However, at present, only 70-80 households have maintained salt farming, providing some 1,200 tonnes of salt in total to the market per year.
Hundreds of hectares of salt in Loc Ha and Thach Ha districts have been left deserted and are being covered by wild grass.
Ho Do Commune is now home to just 40 salt-farming households with a total area of three hectares, leaving around 90 hectares idle.
Meanwhile, the infrastructure for salt production has also severely deteriorated.
The supply of salt from the south of the country is also abundant and cheaper, making it difficult for Ha Tinh salt producers. No one wants to pursue salt farming anymore, except for the elderly or those with poor health who can't do other jobs, said an official from Ho Do Commune.
