Following heavy rain on Thursday evening, a 3-kilometre section of the canal running from Thi Nghe Bridge in District 1 to Cong Ly Bridge in District 3 was covered by massive fish deaths and rubbish and water hyacinth.

On the morning of May 9, environmental workers spent more than two hours collecting the dead fish, which were primarily tilapia, red tilapia, and carp.

The collected fish are being transported to the Da Phuoc landfill for proper disposal.

The Nhieu Loc–Thi Nghe Canal has experienced several fish die-offs in recent years, with the most severe incident occurring in 2016 when up to 70 tonnes of dead fish were collected.

Once hailed as the most scenic canal in Ho Chi Minh City following its restoration, the waterway has continued to suffer from recurring pollution, undermining efforts to maintain its environmental and aesthetic value.
