Elderly woman faces horrific rotting disease
An old woman in Vinh Long Province is in need of financial support to help treat a strange disease that causes her face to rot away.
80-year-old Trieu Nhin cannot speak comfortably anymore as most of her mouth and nose have gone. The disease started 8 years ago. Nhin's health deteriorated so she stayed home to take care of her grandchild. One day, her grandchild scratched her face and left a small injury.
She thought that the scratch would heal in a few days but a week later, it was swollen and hurt badly. After taking medicines, the pain only stopped temporarily. Without money, Nhin didn't go to the hospital and only took painkillers as the wound worsened.
Nhin's husband died long ago. She had to work hard to raise five children but all of them are still poor.
Thach Thi Huong, Nhin's daughter, said, "A few months ago, my mother fell and had her bones fractured. She lies on the bed most of the day and doesn't talk to anyone. When she eats, the food is pushed out."
Mai Van Tanh from Vinh Long City's Red Cross Organisation said they supported Nhin's family with 10kg of rice each month. The local organisations give them gifts sometimes. Vice Chairman of Ward 8 People's Committee Nguyen Trung Dan said they were calling for support to build a new house for Nhin.
