Drought worsens erosion in Ca Mau

The ongoing drought is exacerbating erosion in the southernmost province of Ca Mau.

Tran Van Thoi District has suffered the most, with erosion affecting 242 local spots across 7.30 kilometres, as reported by the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Khanh Hai Commune faces the most severe impact, with 105 erosion spots, while Tran Hoi and Khanh Binh each have 23.

The drought has dried up most canals in the district, leading to severe erosion along some roads.

The Co Xang-Tac Thu-Da Bac Road, in particular, has developed cracks that significantly increase the risk of erosion, reminiscent of the situation in 2020, unless urgent action is taken.

Nguyen Tien Hai, the Party Secretary of Ca Mau, has directed the authorities in Tran Van Thoi District to either remove or trim large trees along roads at risk of erosion. The authorities have additionally reduced vehicle loads on the western coastal dyke to minimise the effect.

Ca Mau previously declared an erosion emergency along 29 kilometres of coastline in six sections within Nam Can District.
