The Hanoi Department of Education and Training today, October 11, issued a document banning students from using mobile phones in the classroom.

According to the document, based on actual observations and reports from media agencies, and public opinion, students’ use of mobile phones and broadcasting devices in the class have negatively affected the quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning.

Under the department’s requirement, the school administration and teachers are in charge of collecting students' mobile phones and broadcasting devices before the first class starts. They will keep these devices and give them back to the students at the end of the school day.

When teachers permit the use of mobile phones and communication devices in certain classes, students are allowed to bring their mobile phones into the classroom.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training stated that it is important for parents to closely cooperate with teachers and the school regarding their children's use of mobile phones.

A representative from the department stated that the move aims to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in schools in Hanoi.

Earlier, many countries, including the Netherlands, Greece, Denmark, Hungary, the UK, China and South Korea, have prohibited students from using mobile phones in the classroom.
