The number of Vietnamese students at US universities and colleges has increased by 5.70 percent, to 21,900 students in the academic year 2022-2023 according to the 2023 Open Doors Report by the Institute of International Education.

Vietnamese students continue to constitute the fifth largest group of foreign students in the US. The country remains the second-leading place of origin for international students at community colleges, comprising 7.60 percent of all international community college students and the fourth largest source of international undergraduate students with 14,295 students.  Science, technology, engineering and math as well as business and management studies remain top areas of study in the United States for Vietnamese students. The percentage of Vietnamese students pursuing STEM and business/management majors are 47.60 percent and 24.70 percent respectively.

Overall, the United States has seen a two-year rebound of international students following the pandemic, with over 14 percent growth in new enrollments in the academic year 2022-2023.  The increase was felt across the United States, with 48 out of 50 states experiencing growth. International students now make up about six percent of enrolled students across US campuses, with more than one million students representing over 230 countries.

As the Open Doors data shows, education remains a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship. The US Mission to Vietnam is committed to deepening education cooperation in the spirit of the 2023 US – Vietnam Joint Statement on the elevation of US-Vietnamese ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
