HCM City is making efforts to finish the construction of its first metro line linking Ben Thanh and Suoi Tien by the end of this year, complete the training of operation staff by June next year, and put the line into commercial operation a month after that.

HCM City's first metro to operate from next July

In a report sent on Thursday to the city's Transport Department, the Management Authority for Urban Railways, the project investor, said that they had completed 96 percent of construction work and successfully conducted a trial run on the whole route on August 29.

Under the proposal by the local transport department, tickets would range from VND12,000-18,000 per trip.

Daily unlimited use travel cards would cost VND40,000 and three-day cards VND90,000.

A monthly pass will cost VND260,000, with students paying half that.

The city also plans special exemption policies for people with disabilities, children, the elderly, and war veterans.

HCM City's first metro line runs nearly 20km from Ben Thanh Station in District 1 to Long Binh Depot in Thu Duc City. The project has cost over VND 43.70 trillion (USD1.90 billion) and consists of three underground stations and 11 elevated platforms. It was initially scheduled for completion in late 2021 to run commercially in 2022, but then delays hit due to the Covid-9 pandemic and procedure-related problems.

The city's second metro project, connecting Ben Thanh with Tham Luong, is still in the site clearance stage, as the official development assistance capital for it has yet to be extended.
