Authorities in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai have just started construction of a resettlement area project for residents of the Lang Nu Village who lost their homes in recent flash floods and landslides.

PM Pham Minh Chinh visits the landslide area in Lang Nu Village and directs rescue work on September 12.

Statistics from local authorities said that 33 households in Lang Nu Village were buried or swept away by horrific flash floods and landslides triggered by Typhoon Yagi on September 10, leaving 52 people dead, 15 injured, and 14 missing.

In a recent visit to the village, PM Pham Minh Chinh asked local authorities to build a resettlement area for affected families in Lang Nu latest by the end of December this year so that they can stabilise their lives.

The project plan then had been approved by local officials, experts, and local residents at a meeting held on September 15.

Accordingly, 40 new houses will be built for households whose homes were ruined or heavily damaged by the landslides in Lang Nu. The resettlement area, which lies about 3 km from the old village, is a spacious area on high terrain, and suitable for arranging transport, electricity and water infrastructure.

According to the construction plan, the new houses in the resettlement area will be constructed in the traditional architecture of the local Tay people.

The project is expected to be completed before December 31.

Lying at the foot of the Nui Voi Mountain, Lang Nu Village is home to 167 households with 760 people of the Tay ethnic group, who have been living on growing rice and corn for generations here.
