Google partners with Vietnam in nationwide anti-scam campaign

Google and Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security have launched a joint anti-scam campaign aimed at raising public awareness and strengthening online safety.

Announced on June 26, the partnership with the ministry’s Department of Cybersecurity and Hi-tech Crime Prevention and Control marks a major step in the effort to fight digital fraud in Vietnam.

The initiative uses a social-first approach to deliver practical cybersecurity education to millions of internet users, equipping them with tools to identify and avoid online scams in an increasingly digitised society.

According to ministry data, more than 6,000 cybercrime cases were recorded in 2024, with estimated damages exceeding VND 12 trillion (approximately USD 459 million). Around 70 percent of Vietnamese internet users reportedly receive at least one scam message or call each month.

The ministry highlighted seven common forms of fraud, including fake educational institution scams, frozen fund recovery schemes, impersonation of authorities, romance scams, service payment fraud, online shopping and travel scams, and investment scams using fake platforms.

Marc Woo, managing director of Google Vietnam, said online safety was the foundation of the country’s thriving digital economy.

“Google recognises the escalating threat of online scams, and we are committed to leveraging our technology to combat this critical challenge,” he said.

He noted that scams undermine user trust and cause financial harm, adding that the partnership reflects Google’s deep commitment to creating a safer digital space for Vietnamese users.

A key feature of the campaign involves over 200 local YouTube content creators who will integrate anti-scam messaging into games, personal stories and short-form videos to reach millions of followers.

The campaign will also release a series of eight one-minute videos featuring cybersecurity experts from Google and the public security ministry. These videos will explain each major type of scam and provide clear prevention tips.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Ba Son, deputy director of the Department of Cybersecurity and Hi-tech Crime Prevention and Control, said public education plays a vital role in reducing fraud.

“To truly protect citizens online, we need collective action across society. The involvement of global tech firms with large user communities in Vietnam is especially important,” he said.

He praised Google’s initiative, professionalism and collaboration with authorities and local creators.

“This campaign demonstrates the determination and shared responsibility of state agencies, businesses and social groups in safeguarding citizens online and building a safer, more trustworthy digital environment,” Son added.
