HCM City set to roll out over 250 additional electric buses

HCM City will soon put 256 more electric buses into operation, bringing the city’s total electric bus fleet to 419.

The HCM City Public Transport Management Centre has announced the bidding results for 37 bus routes.

Two operators have won bids for these routes. Phuong Trang Futabuslines secured 35 routes, while Vinbus Ecology Transport Services won the remaining two routes.

According to the winning proposals, 600 vehicles will be used across the 37 routes. These include 256 electric buses, 43 running on compressed natural gas (CNG), and 301 diesel-powered vehicles. Of the total, 557 are newly manufactured in 2025, while the rest date back to 2016.

Once deployed, the 256 new electric buses will increase HCM City’s electric fleet to 419.

A representative from the Public Transport Management Centre said contract negotiations with the two winning operators are expected to conclude this week. If everything proceeds on schedule, the new buses could begin operating by August 1 or earlier.

HCM City currently has 163 electric buses and 523 CNG-powered vehicles out of a total of 2,214 in operation.

Electric buses are expected to help reduce pollution, improve air quality in the inner city, and accelerate the shift to clean-energy transport as outlined by the government and HCM City authorities.

Since late 2023, the Public Transport Management Centre has finalised bidding for 39 bus routes. The remaining routes will be put out to tender in line with the city’s rollout plan.
