A minor earthquake occurred at noon on Thursday in the central province of Quang Ngai's Son Tay District, following many tremors in different locations over the past few days.

According to the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Geophysics, the 2.8 Richter scale magnitude earthquake occurred at 10.42 am on May 30.

The incident happened at a depth of around 8.1 kilometres.

Just four minutes earlier, a tremor of 3.2 magnitude on the Richter scale also occurred in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum's Kon Plong District at a depth of about 8.1 kilometres.

Both were small earthquakes with short aftershocks and did not pose any significant risk of natural disaster, the centre said, adding that they were still monitoring the tremors.

Several earthquakes were recorded yesterday in the provinces of Yen Bai, Phu Yen, and Kon Tum. Those in Yen Bai and Phu Yen measured 3.5 magnitude on the Richter scale, causing mild shaking. Meanwhile, two quakes in Kon Tum were more minor.

The northern province of Ninh Binh experienced a 3.4 Richter scale magnitude earthquake at a depth of around 17 kilometres on May 27.

The Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre forecasted that Ninh Binh would see more earthquakes below a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale in the coming time.

The Institute of Geophysics will conduct detailed research on the geological structure and seismic activity in Ninh Binh and its surrounding areas to warn local authorities and residents.
