Authorities of Hoi An City have instructed to limit visitors to the Japanese Covered Bridge, one of the locality’s most iconic destinations, as it is facing the deterioration.

According to the authorities, the number of tourists to the bridge has been restricted to a maxim 20 at a time.

Nguyen Van Son, vice chairman of Hoi An City, said the 400-year-old bridge, built by Japanese traders in the 17th century has suffered severe deterioration in recent years even being restored for many times.

Son, however, added that the restriction on visitors is just a temporary solution while waiting for a comprehensive restoration which is still under discussion among experts and authorities.

Around 4,000 travellers a day visit the bridge, which has worsened its condition.

By the end of this year, Quang Nam Province plans to hold the last seminar to identify solutions for the bridge.

Several experts have said dismantling and rebuilding the bridge would be the best way to save it, but the local authorities have yet to decide how to save the popular destination.

In 1990, bridge was listed as a national cultural site. Although it has been restored seven times, the bridge is at risk of collapsing. In recent years, cracks in the foundations and main structure, timber girders, beams and rafters have been found and the problem is worsening.
