HCM City has planned to spend VND6.2 trillion (USD243.61 million) to upgrade the Van Thanh Canal.

Van Thanh Canal is 1.5 kilometres long, running through Binh Thanh District. It is one of several drainage channels that helps prevent flooding in the area. The elevated section of Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro route will pass over the canal.

The canal is currently struggling with severe pollution, affecting nearby homes.

Some sections of the canal are full of rubbish, causing a bad odour.

The canal project will be carried out until 2028. Under the project, around 1,063 households will be relocated and roads along the two sides of the canal will be also built.
