An Giang’s authorities have issued guidelines cracking-down on employees expressing their personal opinions on social media such as Facebook.

The move follows two employees being fined for criticising the manners of the chairman of the provincial people's committee Vuong Binh Thanh.

In October, Le Thi Thuy Trang, a literature teacher from a high school in An Giang Province, shared an article on about the Government Inspectorate's proposal to have Thanh disciplined. She commented that he "looks arrogant".

The post received likes and comments showing agreement of several people, including Huynh Nguyen Huy Phuc, an employee of An Giang Power Company and Phan Thi Kim Nga, the vice chief of the provincial Department of Industry and Trade.

As a result, Trang and Phuc were VND5 million (USD238) for breaking rules on employees expressing opinions and making potentially libellous claims. Meanwhile, Nga received a warning for involvement in the case but she was not fined.

An Giang provincial authorities have warned staff about the use of Facebook.
