Coach Phan Thanh Hung’s team had high hopes in the tournament, and were hoped to restore some hope for the domestic league which is currently struggling in the face of fan indifference.

With clubs now the play things of rich owners, grandiose promises of investing in football have evaporated as their love for football has come well behind their other investment concerns in the stock market, real estate and banks.

Several super-rich club chairmen have expressed their willingness to withdraw from the league and show little interest in rescuing the domestic football scene.

Disputes are still ravaging the domestic football scene between football club owners, the referees and leaders of Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).

Hanoi Football Club and Hanoi Junior FC have already been dissolved when their owner, business mogul Nguyen Duc Kien was arrested under charges of economic wrongdoings.

Others football clubs such as SHB Danang or Navibank SG are also under threat.

The latest loss to the Philippines at the AFF which may be enough to send the national team home, has only gone further in exposing the many shortcomings and weakness of Vietnamese football.
