Mahan takes WGC crown as worst-ever Woods stumbles in

American Hunter Mahan jumped out of the pack Sunday to win the 8.5 million-dollar World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational.

Tiger Woods putts on the 16th green during the final round of the World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational on the South Course at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Woods looked and sounded like a broken man after his final round at the Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday where he carded the worst 72-hole score of his 14-year professional career.

American Hunter Mahan jumped out of the pack Sunday to win the 8.5 million-dollar World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational by two strokes while top-ranked Tiger Woods hit a new low in golf.

Mahan, who began the final round three strokes off the pace, made a sizzling start with five front-nine birdies on his way to a bogey-free six-under par 66 at Firestone Country Club.

He finished at 12-under 268 to collect 1.4 million dollars for his first WGC victory and his third on the US PGA Tour. Compatriot Ryan Palmer, who fired a 69, was second on 10-under 270.

Woods fired a 77 to finish a shocking 30 strokes behind Mahan, equal 78th for second-to-last in the worst performance of his career.

Woods, however, preserved his world No. 1 ranking for at least one more week when Phil Mickelson finished equal 46th. Mickelson had to finish solo fourth or better to pass Woods
