A poor family in Hanoi is appealing for financial help to save two young children fighting life-threatening illnesses.
Nguyen Thi Thuy's nine-year-old son, Duy, was diagnosed with leukaemia at age six and requires treatment at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. Her six-month-old daughter, Phuong Thao, has a serious heart condition.

Phuong Thao was found at ten-week's old to have a heart defect and doctors at the National Hospital of Pediatrics carried out emergency surgery to keep her alive until she is strong enough for a major operation at the Hanoi Heart Hospital to correct the congenital defect.

The family is now facing a bill of about VND100 million (USD4,700), Thao's grandfather said.
"I will sell the house, but we have already had to borrow against the house-ownership certificate," he said.
Dr. Duong Thi Thuy Nga said: "Thao is now 29 weeks old but weighs only 2.6 kg. She has transposition of the great arteries and needs immediate surgery or she may die."
The surgery will cost VND60 million, but post-operative hospital care will drive that even higher, and that doesn't include the medical bills for the boy.
