Johnathan Hanh Nguyen moved by birthday with cancer patients

Vietnamese businessman Johnathan Hanh Nguyen became emotional after child cancer patients sang him a surprise birthday song during a visit to a children’s hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

A video showing businessman Johnathan Hanh Nguyen celebrating an early birthday at the oncology and haematology department of Children’s Hospital 2 in Ho Chi Minh City has attracted widespread attention online.

In the footage, Nguyen sat beside hospital beds while dozens of young cancer patients sang him a birthday song in unison. Afterward, the children handed him paper heart cut-outs carrying handwritten wishes for his new year.

The emotional moment visibly moved the businessman, who has supported many of the children during their treatment journeys in recent years.

According to representatives from Children’s Hospital 2, the visit took place on May 14, when Nguyen came to deliver lucky money envelopes and words of encouragement to patients receiving treatment at the department.

Hospital staff said his presence has become familiar at the facility over the years. Through his support, many children have gained access to treatment and renewed hope in overcoming illness.

Johnathan Hanh Nguyen, born in 1951, is chairman of IPPG, a corporation operating in luxury retail, trade, airport services, investment and international distribution.

Beyond business activities, Nguyen has frequently participated in charitable and social welfare programmes, supporting communities affected by natural disasters, disease outbreaks and other hardships. During the Covid-19 pandemic, IPPG announced several initiatives providing medical supplies and financial assistance for anti-pandemic efforts.

In recognition of his contributions, Vietnam’s Ministry of Home Affairs is currently seeking public feedback on a proposal to award Nguyen the title of “Labour Hero” under the Law on Emulation and Commendation.
