An English class has been opened at Yen Vui Restaurant during the weekend for the past two months to help disadvantaged children in the central Danang City.

The programme is supported by Lotus Charity Foundation based in HCM City. The classes are held from 7.30 am to 9 am during the weekends for students from fifth to eighth grades at the Yen Vui Restaurant on 68 Ly Trien Street.

Van Khanh, manager of the class, said, "English is an important subject for their future and they all want to learn English but they can't afford the English centres. We only collect VND1,000 (USD0.04) and provide them with the infrastructure and curriculum. The money will later be used for a special event for everyone."

Besides the regular curriculum, the students will be able to join interactive group activities or be taught to sing English songs. Various kinds of games are used to make the lessons more interesting.

  

Small games make the class more interesting.

The class has quickly gained attention from disadvantaged children and volunteers. As of now the class is run by four volunteers and a native English teacher. Everyone hopes to bring knowledge as well as joy to the children. 29-year-old Nguyen Quoc Truong said after hearing about the class, he immediately agreed to teach basic English to the children on Sundays.

"The children will be taught how to pronounce the words more correctly through games so that they won't feel bored. Older children from fifth to eighth grades will be given more exercises by other teachers," he said. "I'm glad that after each class, the children become more and more encouraged. They converse more in English and their vocabulary has improved greatly."

Truong also has a charity drawing class for children who are interested in art. According to Van Khanh, she will open a Maths class on Saturdays in the future.
