Nguyen Thi Loan was admitted to Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi on December 27, 2025 in critical condition, suffering from severe heart failure and multiple complex cardiovascular disorders, doctors said. She requires constant oxygen support and intensive medical treatment to stay alive.
Loan is being kept alive by monitors and ventilators. Frail and barely able to speak, she said her husband had sold the family’s last plot of farmland and borrowed wherever he could, but still could not raise the roughly VND 300 million (about USD 11,500) needed for surgery.
“I want to live because my children are still so small,” she said, her voice breaking. “But our family is too poor. I can’t bear to see my husband suffer any more. I just want to go home and see my children again.”
Her husband, Nguyen Van Quyet, said the family has no assets apart from the land already sold and survives on irregular manual labour. “We have tried everything. I am completely desperate and can only hope for help from kind-hearted people,” he added.
Doctors said Loan suffers from severe aortic valve regurgitation, major dilation of the aorta, serious leakage of the mitral and tricuspid valves, pulmonary hypertension and end-stage heart failure. Without surgery, her condition is likely to be fatal.
She requires a complex, multi-stage cardiac operation that must be carried out as soon as possible, hospital officials said. The estimated cost is VND 300-400 million, excluding post-operative care and specialised nutrition.
Doctors have appealed to readers and donors for assistance, saying the young mother still has a chance to survive if the surgery can be performed in time.
