Younger brother of former Vinalines head arrested

Colonel Duong Tu Trong has been arrested for aiding and abetting the former chairman of Vinalines's flight abroad.

Colonel Duong Tu Trong was arrested on February 22 for aiding and abetting former chairman of Vinalines, Duong Tien Dung's flight abroad.

Trong, 52, Deputy Chief of the Police Department for Administrative Management on Social Order, violated Article 275 of the Vietnam’s Civil Code relating to supporting offenders for escaping abroad.

Trong was assigned as chief of the criminal division of the police department of Haiphong City. He has made a reputation for himself by making a number of large busts.

Five other policemen in Haiphong City have already been arrested on the same charge, including second lieutenant, Nguyen Trong Anh, from the police division in charge of social crimes (PC45); Hoang Van Thang, from the anti-environmental criminal police board; Vu Tien Son, former Deputy Head of PC45 along with Vu Van Sau and Pham Dinh Nghien, who were both police officials of An Tho Commune.

Dung, who was also director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, was arrested on September 4, under an international warrant for alleged economic offenses committed during his tenure as chairman of the board of Vinalines, which is a state-owned enterprise.

Dung was apprehended in another Southeast Asian country and then extradited to Vietnam by Interpol.

According to Vietnam's Civil Code, the highest punishment for those who provide aid to those trying to flee from criminal charges, he could face 20 years of prison time.
