A woman in Nam Dinh Province is calling for financial support to help save her husband from serious illness and support their four small children.

Nguyen Thi Thay is taking care of her husband at Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi. "We can't survive without him," Thay said. "We have four children together, the youngest is two years old and the oldest is 11."

Thanh's family is poor and can't afford the school fees for all of her children. When she was told that her husband would be able to work abroad for a VND100m (USD4,200) fee, the family borrowed money from the black market to seize the chance. But they were tricked as Thay's husband couldn't find work and had to borrow money to return home.

They then collected scrap in Hanoi in order to earn some money to pay the debts. One week later, her husband had a stomach ache and was admitted to Bach Mai Hospital.

Dr Nguyen Ba Anh said, "The patient has acute pancreatitis and multi-organ failure. He had dialysis and needed a ventilator. The treatment cost will be high and he doesn't have health insurance."

Without money, Thay has wanted to take her husband home multiple times but the doctors persuaded them to stay since her husband can be treated. According to Thay, they sent money and asked an acquaintance to help them enrol in the health insurance system a long time ago. Yet when they asked for it, they were told that there was none.

Thay's husband has got better but needs to take medicines that cost up to VND3m (USD127) per day.
