The People's Court of Tuong Duong District, Nghe An Province, confirmed on April 21 that after receiving the DNA test results, the disputed cow was handed over to La Thi On, who was identified as its rightful owner.

The 3-year-old cow, estimated to be worth around VND5 million (approximately USD200), was brought home two months ago by Lo Van Thuong, 62, who claimed to have found it in a nearby forest. He asserted that the animal was a descendant of his herd, which had been left to graze freely in the wild. However, his neighbour, La Thi On, 44, claimed the cow belonged to her family and had gone missing earlier.

Tensions escalated, and repeated mediation attempts by local authorities in Yen Hoa Commune failed to resolve the issue. Free-range grazing is a long-standing tradition in the region, often leading to confusion and disputes over livestock ownership.

After three unsuccessful reconciliation attempts, both parties agreed to a DNA test. Working with local officials, the district court collected genetic samples from the cow and arranged for a forensic analysis.

The DNA results confirmed that the cow belonged to On. The cost of the DNA test, VND7.8 million (about USD310), exceeded the animal's market value. Both households also incurred additional travel and legal costs. However, they had previously agreed in writing that the party found to be in the wrong would return the cow and cover all expenses.

This is not the first time livestock DNA testing has been used to resolve disputes in Yen Hoa. In 2020, local authorities handled a similar case, and in 2018, the Tuong Duong District Court resolved eight such disputes through DNA analysis.
