The 16th National Assembly began its inaugural session with the participation of 500 deputies, with major decisions on personnel high on the agenda.

In the opening days, lawmakers are set to review and decide on organisational and leadership positions, including the election of the president, prime minister and National Assembly chair.

Other positions to be elected or approved include the chief justice of the Supreme People’s Court, the head of the Supreme People’s Procuracy, the vice-president, deputy chairs of the National Assembly, members of its standing committee, heads of committees, the state auditor general and the secretary general of the National Assembly.

The assembly will also determine the number of deputy chairs and standing committee members, as well as the structure and composition of the government for the new term.

Ta Thi Yen, Vice Chairwoman of the NA Committee for Deputy Affairs, said a total of 39 senior leadership positions would be elected or approved during the session.

She said the selection of capable and reputable leaders would be crucial as the country enters a new phase requiring institutional reform and sustained economic growth.

The National Assembly is also expected to review and pass eight draft laws, alongside decisions on socio-economic, financial and budgetary matters, as well as oversight issues.

The session is scheduled to last around 11 days, divided into two phases from April 6 to April 12 and from April 20 to April 23.
