Vietnam to face freshwater shortage by 2050

Around 8.4 million Vietnamese people will be short of safe water by 2050, according to the Asian Development Bank’s warning.

Around 8.4 million Vietnamese people will be short of safe water by 2050, according to the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) warning.

The ADB said that Vietnam is one of the five nations which will be hardest hit by climate change. Due to rising sea levels, millions of hectares of land are likely to be submerged while an estimated ten of million will be displaced in the future.

People living in rural areas make up 73 percent of the country’s population, so poverty is likely to increase from 21 to 35 percent.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) is currently implementing programmes and projects to reduce the impacts of climate change.

The MARD has co-ordinated with localities on socio-economic development programmes related to preventing floods, and reducing the effects of natural disasters in order to cope with climate change.
