Vietnam looks for more FAO support with fighting poverty, climate change

Vietnam hopes FAO would continue to assist the country in agriculture projects, food security, poverty reduction and adaptation to climate change, a Vietnamese leader said.

Vietnam hopes the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations will continue to assist and support the country in agriculture co-operation projects, prioritising food security, eradicating poverty, easing the negative impact of climate change and protecting the environment.

Receiving FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva in Hanoi yesterday, President Truong Tan Sang further said he highly valued the organisation's taking Vietnam as an important partner country in agriculture co-operation, as evidenced by the more than 400 FAO-financed projects being implemented in Vietnam.

The State leader attributed Vietnam's world acclaimed achievements in agriculture to the organisation's help, and voiced the country's pledge for support to FAO's initiatives and activities in the future.

Thanking the official and the organisation for selecting Vietnam to host its 31st conference for Asia and the Pacific, Sang said the country would do its best to make the meeting a success. He also spoke highly of the outcomes of FAO's South-South co-operation programme, and confirmed Vietnam's strong support for the programme's implementation.

Da Silva expressed his joy at Vietnam's recent progress in agriculture, describing the country as a leading state in this field.

Speaking highly of Vietnam's contributions to global efforts in ensuring food security and eradicating poverty, he further said the conference would be a chance for regional countries to see with their own eyes Vietnam's successes in agriculture.

The same day, da Silva had a meeting with Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, during which he expressed his hope that Vietnam would share its experiences with others through its active participation in the framework of the South-South and tripartite co-operation.
