Vietnam cements strategic partnership with China

The Vietnam-China friendship is a valuable asset that should be nurtured and developed in the future, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has said.

While receiving Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Hanoi on October 14, Trong said the Vietnamese Party, State and people attach great importance to strengthening ties of long-lasting friendship, close neighbourliness and comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership with China.

The Party leader spoke highly of the outcome of the October 13 talks between Vietnamese PM Nguyen Tan Dung and Premier Li Keqiang and stressed both sides need to maintain high-level exchanges to satisfactorily settle pending issues through peaceful negotiations, so as to develop their healthy and stable partnership.

For his part, Li lauded Vietnam’s Renewal achievements and expressed his belief under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam the country will obtain greater successes in national construction and development.

He assured Trong that China wants to strengthen the close comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership with Vietnam under the motto of ‘friendly neighbourliness, comprehensive co-operation, durable stability and future-oriented vision’ and in the spirit of ‘good neighbours, good friends, good comrades and good partners’.

On the same day, Premier Li also met with State President Truong Tan Sang who praised the results of talks between the two PMs, particularly the establishment of three working groups on infrastructure, monetary and maritime cooperation. 

Sang suggested both sides enhance political trust, maintain visit exchanges at all lelvels, better implement an action program on comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership, strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation and apply effective measures to balance bilateral trade.

He also said Vietnam and China should settle sea-related disputes through peaceful means in line with international law, and accelerate negotiations on the area off the Bac Bo (Tonkin) Gulf to make practical progress in boundary demarcation for future cooperation and development in the area.

The two countries should seek ‘transitional’ solutions that are acceptable to both sides and do not conflict with each other’s viewpoints, he said

Sang asked Premier Li to convey his best regards to the Chinese leaders and invited President Xi Jinping and other leaders to visit Vietnam in the future.

At another reception, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung affirmed the Vietnamese NA will do its best to foster close Vietnam-China ties.

He suggested the two countries’ legislative bodies accelerate visit exchanges to share experience and strengthen coordination at regional and international forums.

Hung asked Premier Li to extend the invitation to visit Vietnam in 2014 to Zhang de Jiang, Chairman of the National People’s Committee (NPC) Standing Committee.
