The bus is 18 metres long and can transport up to 140 passengers. This is 3 times higher capacity than normal buses.

The bus, sponsored by Mercedes Benz, is being operated on a trial basis as part of the Hannoi Ecotrans project.

Nguyen Hoang Hai, director of the Urban Traffic Management Centre under the Hanoi Department of Transport said, “After one month of trial operation, the bus has run very smoothly. Now we are checking its fuel consumption and features designed for passengers.”

The bus runs at a speed of 20 kilometres per hour. It takes about one hour to go from the My Dinh Bus Station to Noi Bai International Airport. Currently there are 6 trips daily running during rush hour.

According to Hai, passengers can still buy ticket for this route as they would for normal bus routes. However, this kind of bus cannot run in internal areas of Hanoi due to difficulties in traffic infrastructure.

At present, Vietnam has only two extended buses operating, one in Hanoi and one in Ho Chi Minh City.
