Delegates attend the opening ceremony of the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York, USA, on March 9.

The 70th session of the commission, known as CSW70, runs from March 9 to 19 and brings together representatives of governments, international organisations and civil society groups worldwide.

Participants are discussing policies to advance gender equality and empower women.

Key topics at this year’s session include improving women’s and girls’ access to justice, preventing violence against women, strengthening gender equality in legal systems and supporting vulnerable groups.

Earlier, marking International Women's Day, Antonio Guterres, secretary-general of the United Nations, called on the international community to intensify efforts to ensure justice and equal rights for women and girls globally.

According to the UN chief, women worldwide currently enjoy only about 64 per cent of the legal rights granted to men.

He said legal discrimination continues to affect many areas of women’s lives.

In some countries, women are not allowed to own property, file for divorce or work without their husband’s permission.

In more than 40 countries, marital rape has not yet been criminalised, while other restrictions limit women’s access to education, their ability to pass nationality to their children and even their freedom of movement.

Guterres also warned that many gains achieved after decades of progress could be at risk of reversal amid rising authoritarianism, political instability and the resurgence of patriarchal attitudes.
