Vice President visits WTO chief in Geneva

Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan paid a visit to WTO General Director Pascal Lamy to strengthen relations between Vietnam and the world's largest trade body.

Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan paid a courtesy visit to World Trade Organisation General Director Pascal Lamy on Thursday to strengthen relations between Vietnam and the world\'s largest trade body.

The Geneva visit was made ahead of Doan\'s participation at the 13th Francophone Summit scheduled for October 23-24 in Montreux, Switzerland.

Vice President Doan said she highly valued the WTO leader\'s role in the Doha negotiations and suggested he create better conditions for Viet Nam to implement its commitments when joining the WTO while ensuring the country enjoys the benefits of membership.

She also asked for Pascal Lamy\'s support for Viet Nam to secure a representative on the WTO Secretariat.

Pascal Lamy said Viet Nam\'s admission to the WTO was a great success and said he would try his best to further assist Viet Nam.

On the same day, Vice President Doan and more than 50 representatives of Vietnamese businesses heard a report by the Vietnamese Mission to the UN, WTO and other international organisations in Geneva on several WTO activities relating to Viet Nam, including the Doha negotiations and dispute resolution within the WTO.
