Vehicles being assembled in Vietnam saw a strong surge in March sales doubling February's figures.

March sales for members of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) reached 9,298 vehicles, a dramatic increase compared with not only this February but also the last March. Sales of passenger cars rose by over 100% while multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and commercial vehicle sales went down.

Despite Toyota’s recall crisis, the Japanese car manufacturer still had 3 models atop the list for mast sales in March. Vios, Altis and Camry accounted for 52% of the market share.

In April, a new Vios model will hit sales floors and GM Daewoo Cruise will be welcomed to the Vietnamese market.

In addition to passenger vehicles, MPV and sport utility vehicles (SUV) also saw an increase in sales for March, up 100% compared to February. Sales in the South accounted for 60% or 1,170 units of 2,200 units sold. That’s is one of the reasons why a new brand of Nissan Grand Livina will be launched in this area.

Toyota Innova remains the first position in MPV segment with sales of nearly 1,000 units in March. Despite having a new series 1.6 in addition to series 2.0, Truong Hai’s Kia Carens could not compete against the Toyota Innova. However, Grand Livina may become a potential rival of Toyota Innova this April.

Ford’s Everest rose 250% compared with last month.

The top 3 automobile manufacturers in March are the same as last month. VMC, a joint venture with Nissan Vietnam, positioned themselves at the end of the list with only 4 Chery vehicles. The company hopes its new model of Livina will help to improve its sales in April.
