Typhoon Nari slams into central Vietnam

The eye of the storm is now heading into Danang and Quang Nam provinces, according to meteorologists.

Initial reports show the storm brought down trees, pelt off roofs and broke windows of high-rise buildings.

No casualties have been reported. 

In Danang, local residents spent a sleepless night in darkness to reinforce their houses and public works.

Two teenagers in Thua Thien-Hue were swept into the sea by large waves on the afternoon of October 13, according to local authorities.

Nguyen Hoai Nam, 13, and Nguyen Van Bao, 15, were pulled into the violent waves while fishing near Chan May port.

Local border guards and local authorities have yet to find their bodies.

Torrential rains and high tidal surges breached parts of the sea dyke embankment of Cua Dai beach in Quang Nam province.

Water levels of the Hoai River are rising quickly, submerging thousands of houses in the UNESCO-recognised Ancient Town of Hoi An. 

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat also stayed awake the whole night, directing storm prevention work.  

Phat warned local people should stay indoors to avoid unexpected injuries. 

Thousands of soldiers, rescue workers and militiamen were mobilised to evacuate more than 33,000 households from high-risk areas on the evening of October 14.

Vietnam Airlines decided to cancel 14 flights from HCM City, Hanoi and Haiphong to Danang and Hue on October 14-15, leaving more than 2,000 passengers stranded.
