
Preliminary reports from the Traffic Police Department, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam and the Vietnam Maritime and Inland Waterways Administration showed 1,497 traffic accidents nationwide between December 15, 2025 and January 15, 2026. These killed 899 people and injured 908.
Compared with the same period in 2025, accidents fell by 338 cases, or 18.42 per cent. Deaths declined by 114, or 11.25 per cent, while injuries dropped by 255, or 21.93 per cent.
Road accidents accounted for the vast majority, with 1,482 cases, killing 886 people and injuring 905. This represented a year-on-year fall of 338 cases, or 18.57 per cent, 116 deaths, or 11.58 per cent, and 256 injuries, or 22.25 per cent.
Eight railway accidents were reported, killing seven people and injuring two. The number of cases was unchanged from a year earlier, while deaths rose by two, or 40 per cent.
Seven inland waterway accidents killed six people and injured one. The number of cases and deaths was unchanged, while injuries increased by one. No maritime accidents were recorded, unchanged year on year.
In aviation, the Civil Aviation Authority received 11 mandatory safety reports in January, including three level-D incidents, up one from the same period in 2025. Two were attributed to technical faults and one to pilot error.
During the four-day New Year holiday in early 2026, there were 196 traffic accidents, killing 94 people and injuring 154. This marked a fall of 18.67 per cent in cases and 31.88 per cent in deaths, although injuries rose by 12.41 per cent. No particularly serious accidents were reported and traffic congestion was said to be well controlled.
