According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, between January and June this year, Vietnam reported nearly 9,000 traffic accidents, killing 4,100 and injuring 7,000. The figure represented an on-year decrease of 6.19%, 0.75% and 11.44% respectively.

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh said the Tet holiday, spring festivals and exam periods accounted for the worst traffic. He also mentioned the serious consequences of two railway accidents in May and June this year.
Despite the lower number of traffic accidents, traffic jams have continued rising in big cities such as Hanoi and HCM City.
The National Traffic Safety Committee added that driver protests at BOT toll stations in some localities also contributed to a higher number of traffic jams in the first six months.
Deputy PM Truong Hoa Binh highlighted that Hanoi needed to take action to ease traffic jams. The city should stop building high-rise buildings in the city-centre areas and instead focus on developing satellite urban areas to reduce traffic pressure in inner-city districts.
