Traffic accidents down nearly 18 per cent in first five months

Traffic accidents in Vietnam fell across all three key indicators in the first five months of 2026, although crashes involving motorcycles continued to account for more than 83 per cent of all cases.

According to the Traffic Police Department, traffic police nationwide implemented a range of road safety measures during the period, helping curb accidents compared with the same period last year.

The number of traffic accidents fell by 1,414 cases, or 17.9 per cent year-on-year. Traffic-related deaths declined by 332, or 7.5 per cent, while injuries dropped by 1,554, or 29.4 per cent.

Despite the improvements, accidents involving motorcycles and motorbikes remained the dominant category, accounting for 83.61 per cent of all traffic accidents nationwide.

Authorities said the high proportion of motorcycle-related crashes highlighted the need to improve road users' awareness of traffic regulations and strengthen riding skills.

The Traffic Police Department said efforts to enhance road safety and reduce accidents would continue in the coming months.
