Traditional festival held for herder

The Muc Dong (buffalo herder) festival, a traditional event dedicated to children who look after water buffaloes, was held in Da Nang.

The Muc Dong (buffalo herder) festival, a traditional event dedicated to children who look after water buffaloes, was held on November 27-28 in Phong Nam hamlet, Hoa Chau commune, Hoa Vang district, Da Nang city.

On the night of November 27, the whole village was lit up by hundreds of lanterns as villagers eagerly prepared for the main ceremony on the following day. Early in the morning the next day, 60 buffalo boys joined a flag procession from Con Than temple to Than Nong shrine followed by over 400 villagers. During the procession, they prayed for favourable weather and bumper crops.

The festival also featured games such as a blind-man catching ducks and a tug of war. This is the largest its kind ever held in Da Nang so far.

The previous Muc Dong festival was held over 70 years ago in 1936. The resumption of the festival aims to preserve a unique cultural characteristic of the village and enrich the city’s cultural treasure.
