Tien Minh wins US Open 2013 championship title

Vietnamese badminton player, Nguyen Tien Minh triumphed over his Chinese rival, Wing Ki Wong 2-1 in the US Open Prix Gold’s final clash on July 14, winning the championship title.

The opening set was unfavourable for Minh, as he lost 18-21to Wong.

Minh fought hard in the second set, forcing his rival to surrender after a series of attacks in the last minutes, ending it 21-17.

Both players entered the final set, competing in a tit-for-tat strategy to gain every point. Thanks to his international experience, Minh overwhelmed his rival 21-18 in the end, earning him the valuable title.

The Grand Prix Gold is the highest tournament in the Grand Prix system of the International Badminton Federation and Minh’s victory brought 7,000 points to his ranking status.

The championship title helped Minh jump to 8th in the world rankings for the men’s singles category. This will be his advantage during the draw for the world championships to be held this August.

This is the greatest triumph for Tien Minh since 2010, when he came first at Grand Prix Gold series in Thailand, Taiwan (China) and Australia.

In 2011, he lost in the final round and became the runner-up.
