Nguyen Thi Tam, 20, from Phu Ninh District’s Tam Dan Commune is now a student at Quang Nam University.
Tam’s mother Tran Thi Yen, 52, said that her husband Nguyen Huu Phuoc has been suffering from mental problems since 2009. Since he has beaten Yen many times. Yen was even hospitalised due to injuries in such attacks.

According to Yen, Phuoc’s brother has also been struggling with mental problems since he was small. He is living with her family.
The family mainly lives on farming and a modest government subsidy of VND1.62 million (USD69.56) or two disabled members per month. Yen said that her children wanted to leave school to support the family. But she advised them to continue to study so that they could have better opportunities in the future.
Tam is also facing gastritis which has affected her studies. Because of her family’s financial difficulties, she has not yet paid tuition for the second term of this school year. She wanted to give up her studies to support her family.
According to Tran Thi Ha, vice chairwoman of Tam Dan Commune’s Red Cross, Yen’s family is very poor as most of the members are ailing. She hoped that donors could assist them.
